Exciting News for Savannah Families: Georgia Promise Scholarship List is Here!

Hey, Savannah! There’s some big news that’s going to have a positive impact on local students and their families. The final version of the Georgia Promise Scholarship Public School List has just been released, and guess what? Eighteen schools from the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System have made the cut! The list was published over the Presidents’ Day weekend, and you can now check it out on the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) website, along with a handy Calculation Guide for parents who want to understand how schools were evaluated.

What is the Georgia Promise Scholarship?

If you’re wondering what all this fuss is about, let us fill you in. The Georgia Promise Scholarship is designed to assist students who attend schools that fall into the lowest-performing 25% of public schools in Georgia. The evaluation is based on something called the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI). It’s like a report card that averages scores from the past two academic years, focusing on schools that really need some extra help.

Here Are the Schools in Our Community

Now, let’s talk about those 18 Savannah-Chatham schools. They remain unchanged from a previous version of the list that was published back in December 2024. So if you were hoping for some alterations, that’s not happening this time around! The good news for families with students at these schools is that they can begin applying for the Promise Scholarship school voucher starting March 1, 2025.

Who Can Apply?

For families interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, it’s important to understand the eligibility requirements:

  • Students must have been enrolled in a Georgia public school for two consecutive semesters or be a rising kindergartner.
  • Parents or guardians need to have lived in Georgia for at least one year, with exceptions for active-duty military families.
  • Children must reside in a public school attendance zone that is part of the Promise School List.
  • Previous attendance at the specific public school isn’t necessary; attending a public charter or remote learning school counts, too.

Changes in Local Schools

One notable change in the Savannah area is the planned closing of Largo-Tibet Elementary, which is a part of the district’s Long-Range Facilities Plan. Students from the Largo-Tibet attendance zone will be transitioned to either Casimir Pulaski K-8 School or Windsor Forest Elementary. Keep in mind that no matter where students end up, they may still qualify for the Promise Scholarship.

Resources for Families

Want to know more or see if you qualify? You can find helpful resources on MyGeorgiaPromise.org, which lists the approved participating private schools and even offers Family and Private School Handbooks in both English and Spanish. This makes it easier for families to navigate the process!

What’s Next?

As we leap into early 2025, families will soon find out if they qualify for the much-awaited Promise Scholarship. Eligible families can look forward to receiving quarterly payments starting on July 1, 2025, which can be used for the 2025-2026 academic year. This financial assistance can help cover a range of educational expenses, such as private school tuition, textbooks, tutoring services, and even transportation costs!

Application Process

Mark your calendars! The application window for the Promise Scholarship will run from March 1 to April 15, 2025. But here’s a little heads-up: if the number of applications exceeds the available vouchers, priority will be given to households with incomes under four times the federal poverty level. A random drawing will determine how any remaining funds are allocated.

In short, this is a fantastic opportunity for Savannah families to potentially steer their students toward a brighter educational path. Let’s make sure to spread the word so every eligible family gets a chance to learn about the Georgia Promise Scholarship!
