Founded in 1733 by General James Oglethorpe, Savannah is Georgia’s oldest city and one of the most historically significant in the United States. As the first settlement of the Thirteen Colonies, it played a crucial role in colonial America, the American Revolution, and the Civil War.

During the Revolutionary War, Savannah was a battleground for control between the British and American forces. In 1864, General William T. Sherman famously spared the city from destruction during his March to the Sea, presenting it as a Christmas gift to President Abraham Lincoln.
