On March 26, 2025, a coalition of federal and local law enforcement agents took swift action, raiding Wellmade Industries, a flooring manufacturer that has been operating in the area.
This coordinated operation was no ordinary raid. It was part of a massive investigation into labor trafficking, and it uncovered a shocking 60 victims of forced labor. When law enforcement arrived, initially, the workers thought it was an immigration raid and fled, not realizing they were being rescued from an oppressive situation.
Wellmade Industries was just one of many locations targeted in this operation. In total, agents searched eight different sites, including seven residences where workers were living under cramped and questionable conditions. This investigation shines a light on the often unseen struggles faced by migrant workers in various industries across the country.
Following the raid, authorities arrested three individuals who stand accused of serious charges related to this labor trafficking case. Among those arrested were Zhu Chen, the owner of Wellmade Industries, and his nephew, Jiayi Chen. A third individual, Jian Jun Lu, was taken into custody on April 5, 2025.
All three men now face felony charges for trafficking of persons for labor or sexual servitude, a serious crime that underscores the gravity of the situation. At subsequent bond hearings on April 7, it was revealed that the workers’ travel documents were confiscated as soon as they arrived in the United States, effectively trapping them and making any hopes for escape very difficult.
The victims of this sinister scheme were mostly Chinese nationals who had been promised high salaries through a temporary visa program. Unfortunately, the reality was far less appealing, as many workers were forced to endure grueling 12-hour shifts and were prohibited from leaving the factory or their substandard living quarters.
Reports from various sources have indicated that these conditions resemble slave labor, with employees frequently expressing concerns about their safety and living arrangements. The overcrowding and unsafe conditions in which workers lived have become a focal point in the ongoing discussions about labor rights and the treatment of immigrant workers in the U.S.
The FBI, which is spearheading the investigation, confirms that there is currently no threat to the public. During this operation, they deployed 20 translators and a victim specialist to assist those who may need help.
