The Port of Savannah experiences impressive growth and expansion plans in 2024.
The Port of Savannah experienced significant growth in 2024, handling 5.6 million TEUs, a 12.5% increase from 2023. With plans for expansion including new berths and improved operations, Savannah is set to enhance its capacity and economic impact, supported by major investments and infrastructure developments.
City of Savannah is buzzing with excitement! The Port of Savannah has just announced some pretty impressive news. In 2024, the port handled nearly 5.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containerized cargo. That’s a whopping 12.5% increase compared to 2023! This growth has placed Savannah as the fastest-growing container port along the U.S. East and Gulf coasts, ashore to some exciting times ahead.
At the annual State of the Port luncheon, held recently, over 1,700 business and elected leaders gathered to hear about Savannah’s magnificent growth, which is particularly impressive considering the global shipping hiccups we all have been hearing about. The challenges included rerouting shipping lanes due to attacks on the Suez Canal and ongoing labor contract negotiations. Despite these obstacles, Savannah has managed to sail smoothly into success, and there’s a lot more in the pipeline!
The port isn’t just resting on its laurels; it has some grand plans in place. One of the biggest updates is the addition of more berth space, which is crucial for increasing operations. The port will be introducing two new berths at Ocean Terminal, with the first one expected to be open immediately and the second joining the lineup next year. This new setup is all about making storage more efficient and cutting down the time cargo sits idle. A new lay berth is also in the works, aiming to reduce idle time from 12 hours down to just 3 hours—talk about efficiency!
Additionally, Phase I of the Ocean Terminal renovations is set to wrap up by mid-2027, with Phase II expected to finish by mid-2028. These improvements will eventually add capacity for up to 1.5 million TEUs per year. But that’s not all! There are plans to kick off the Savannah Container Terminal on Hutchinson Island by 2030, bringing three more big-ship berths to the table, boosting capacity by an additional 3.5 million TEUs annually.
With a total planned investment of around $4 billion at Ocean Terminal and Savannah Container Terminal, the port is setting sail for a bright future. By 2035, Savannah is projected to hit a total capacity of 12.5 million TEUs. These investments not only aim to enhance operations but also significantly improve the region’s economy.
The Mason Mega Rail Terminal is another star of the show, recording an impressive volume of 540,850 containers moved by train in 2024. This number reflects a healthy 5.7% increase from the previous year. Rail cargo operations are thriving, with transition times averaging between 19 to 24 hours from when cargo is discharged from vessels to when it departs by rail.
There’s more to be excited about as well! The Blue Ridge Connector, which is set to open in 2026, will facilitate efficient rail transport between Savannah and other rapidly growing markets. This connection could transform the shipping landscape in the region.
Savannah’s ports are playing a critical role in Georgia’s economy, supporting over 609,000 full and part-time jobs. That’s an increase of 48,000 jobs, or 8.6% since the 2021 fiscal year! Port activities have a significant impact, contributing $171 billion in sales for businesses across Georgia, generating $72 billion in goods and services each year, which represents about 9% of the state’s GDP.
Let’s not forget the Port of Brunswick, which also handled over 2 million tons of RoRo cargo in 2024, solidifying Georgia’s status as a powerhouse in maritime infrastructure.
In conclusion, Savannah’s Port is not just growing; it’s positively thriving! With all these ambitious plans and growing capacity, the city is set to lead the charge in the maritime industry. Exciting times lie ahead for everyone involved!
