Exciting Times in Savannah: Community Leaders and New Initiatives Steal the Spotlight

Hey Savannah! There’s a lot happening around town these days, and it’s all about people stepping up and making our community a better place. One shining star is Keylan Collins, a dedicated senior at Savannah Early College High School. Keylan isn’t just your average high school student; he’s on a mission to make a difference through leadership, non-profits, and collaboration.

Being an active member of the school council, Keylan has been busy coordinating events, fundraisers, and community activities that have connected students and residents alike. He also took on the role of president of the National Beta Club, where he further showcased his commitment to leadership and service.

In a fantastic achievement, Keylan was recently recognized as one of two Bank of America Student Leaders for Savannah in 2024, highlighting his outstanding contributions to both academics and community initiatives. Over the summer, he participated in a collaboration project with Goodwill and attended a high-profile leadership summit in Washington, D.C. This summit honed in on bringing together nonprofits, governments, and businesses to address our local needs, proving how essential teamwork is in creating effective solutions.

Not only is Keylan making waves in community leadership, but he is also dual-enrolled in marine biology and biological oceanography at Savannah State University. His goals are as big as his heart, making Savannah a better place for everyone!

Every Woman’s Marathon Brings Mixed Reactions

Every Woman’s Marathon held on November 16, 2024, has stirred up various opinions from Savannah residents. City leaders, including Mayor Van Johnson, are gearing up to evaluate how well the event went. They want to hear from you, the community, about what worked and what didn’t. The city’s Tourism Advisory Committee has already expressed the importance of better communication with residents regarding such events.

Officials are being proactive by developing performance criteria, ensuring that if the marathon happens again, it minimizes disruptions for local folks. While Joe Marinelli, the head of Visit Savannah, noted that visitors had a great time, he also acknowledged the grumbles from neighbors about road closures. Balancing festivity with daily life is definitely a tricky task.

Investing in Early Education

East Savannah United has successfully secured a grant to build an early childhood learning center on Savannah’s east side. This $2.5 million project will mainly be funded by the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, with a significant contribution of $100,000 from the Truist Charitable Fund. The center aims to serve 144 children, ensuring that half of them come from low-income families in the community. This initiative demonstrates a solid commitment to nurturing our younger generation.

Exciting Upcoming Events

Savannah Black Heritage Festival, which is set for February 2025. The theme this year is “Reimagining Excellence,” and the festival promises to celebrate African American history and culture through an exciting array of art exhibitions, performances, and a special W.W. Law Lecture Series discussing civil rights and empowerment. With accessibility features like braille programs and tactile maps, this event aims to include everyone. The Grand Festival Day will take place on February 23, creating an unforgettable showcase of cultural displays and activities.

Opportunities for Community Leadership

Neighborhood Leadership Academy will soon open its doors for new applications. This program is perfect for those interested in receiving leadership training focused on community advocacy and understanding important local issues.

Chatham County Board of Elections and voter confidence.

All in all, there’s a surge of excitement in Savannah, with passionate individuals and initiatives working hard to enhance our community. Stay tuned, Savannah – big things are on the horizon!
