The Port of Savannah is set to undergo significant expansion to enhance cargo capacity.
The Georgia Ports Authority has announced ambitious expansion plans during their recent State of the Port address. The Port of Savannah experienced a record-breaking growth in container cargo, and new investments aim to increase capacity significantly by 2035. With ongoing developments at Ocean Terminal and the anticipated Savannah Container Terminal, these plans promise to bolster the local economy, create jobs, and streamline freight operations. The GPA’s commitment to efficiency and connectivity continues to position Savannah as a leader in the shipping industry.
Hey there, Savannah! If you love our bustling city and are always on the lookout for exciting news, you’re in for a treat! The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) just shared some amazing updates during their annual State of the Port address on February 25, 2025, and it’s hard to contain the excitement!
First off, let’s talk numbers. The Port of Savannah handled nearly 5.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containerized cargo in 2024. That’s a whopping 12.5% increase from the previous year! So, what does that mean? Well, that’s an extra 618,000 TEUs moving through our bustling port, making Savannah the fastest growing container gateway on both the U.S. East and Gulf coasts. What an accomplishment for our home!
But wait, there’s more! Not only is Savannah experiencing record growth, but there are also some exciting expansion plans in the pipeline that will keep this momentum going. The GPA is kicking things off with the immediate opening of a new lay berth at Ocean Terminal. Additionally, a second lay berth is expected to be operational by 2026, paving the way for even more efficiency.
Now, if you’re wondering about the renovations at Ocean Terminal, they’re set to be completed in two phases, with Phase I wrapping up by mid-2027 and Phase II by mid-2028. These renovations will boost annual capacity by up to 1.5 million TEUs! And let’s not forget about the new Savannah Container Terminal on Hutchinson Island, which is anticipated to open in Phase I by 2030, adding 3.5 million TEUs annually to our capacity. Talk about growth!
The total investments for all these exciting developments at Ocean Terminal and the Savannah Container Terminal amount to a staggering $4 billion. The goal? To bring Savannah’s capacity up to 12.5 million TEUs by 2035! That’s a bold vision, and we can’t wait to see it unfold.
In addition to growth in cargo handling, the Mason Mega Rail Terminal achieved record volumes in 2024, moving 540,850 containers by train, a nifty increase of 5.7% from the previous year. Savannah is leading the nation in rail efficiency, with containers seamlessly moving from vessel to train in just 24 hours!
Another great achievement to shout about is the Appalachian Regional Port, which experienced a record 37,840 rail lifts in 2024—up by 8.3% compared to 2023. The impacts of these numbers extend beyond the terminals, supporting over 609,000 jobs in Georgia, showing an increase of 8.6% since FY2021!
What does all this port activity mean for economic growth? Well, it translates to a whopping $171 billion in sales for Georgia businesses, which accounts for 12% of the state’s total. Not to mention, port-supported industries contribute around $72 billion annually in goods and services to our state’s GDP, while Georgians earn approximately $40 billion in income tied to this port activity.
To make freight mobility even better, several future developments are underway. The Georgia DOT is working on reconstructing the interchange at I-16 and I-95 in Chatham County to boost operational efficiency. Plus, I-16 is being widened and is expected to be completed in 2025. A $29 million investment will also streamline truck traffic with an overpass at Ocean Terminal!
All in all, Savannah’s ports are making waves in the world of trade and logistics. Even with challenges like the Suez Canal disruptions and labor negotiations, the GPA is thriving through strong partnerships and strategic investments. For 11 consecutive years, Georgia has remained the No. 1 state for business, thanks to the significant role of our beloved ports!
So, keep your eyes peeled, Savannah! Big things are coming, and we’re all part of this incredible story of growth and connectivity. Let’s celebrate what’s next for our vibrant community!
