A lively scene from Savannah's 4th Annual Slithering Parade, showcasing the community spirit and festive atmosphere.
The 4th Annual Slithering Parade in Savannah’s Starland District brought together residents for a night of vibrant fun, featuring snake-themed lanterns, lively music, and a strong sense of community. The event also raised awareness and funds for local organizations, emphasizing the importance of local support, particularly for survivors of human trafficking. As the crowd celebrated with the rhythmic beats of Samba Savannah, the parade showcased the enduring spirit of unity and joy in Savannah, while drawing attention to critical causes in the community.
Savannah came alive this past Saturday evening with the vibrant and colorful 4th Annual Slithering Parade, held in the trendy Starland District. This year’s event was a breathtaking display of illuminating lanterns, funky costumes, and lively music, reminiscent of a Mardi-Gras style celebration. What a delightful way to usher in the spirit of local community and camaraderie!
The Slithering Parade first slithered onto the scene in 2021, thanks to the creative minds of two community enthusiasts: Brent Buice and Michael Kuenlen. Since that time, the parade has only gotten bigger and brighter, attracting residents and families from across the city and beyond. Staged every March before the major St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, this event not only marks the beginning of the festive season but also enriches Savannah’s cultural tapestry.
Every year, participation in the parade is free, welcoming folks of all ages to join in the fun. The only requirement? Carrying a snake-themed lantern! This unique twist ties beautifully into the folktale of St. Patrick driving snakes out of Ireland, adding a fun, quirky element to the procession while also honoring local lore.
Leading the parade was the lively Brazilian-style group, Samba Savannah, known for their energetic performances featuring traditional music. With vocals, guitar, and a parade of drums, the rhythm propelled the celebratory atmosphere to new heights. It’s difficult not to tap your feet when Samba Savannah is in full swing!
But the Slithering Parade is about more than just costumes and music. The event aims to raise awareness and funds for local organizations, emphasizing the importance of community support and togetherness. This year, the Krewe of Humble Hedonists organized the festivities, while a newly founded group, the Krewe of Medusa, took the initiative to assist survivors of sexual assault and human trafficking.
A notable cause highlighted during this year’s parade was the Krewe of Medusa’s effort to raise funds for Tharros Place, a crucial facility dedicated to assisting victims of human trafficking. Chatham County has received widespread attention, unfortunately ranking 6th in Georgia for reported cases of human trafficking, making the work of Tharros Place all the more vital, as it stands as the only residential facility in the area aiding young survivors.
Members of the Krewe of Medusa requested just a modest $25 donation during the parade to support their ongoing efforts at Tharros Place. They also offered a convenient way for folks to contribute via Venmo, ensuring that those who couldn’t attend still had a chance to lend a helping hand.
The parade kicked off from Lone Wolf and made its way to the lively Starland Yard, transforming the streets into a festive wonderland. It was truly heartwarming to see community members come together, sharing joy, laughter, and a sense of purpose.
As the Slithering Parade continues its journey into the future, it highlights the vital importance of unity within the Savannah community. With each passing year, this event has grown stronger, serving as a powerful reminder of how much can be accomplished when people join forces for a common cause. Who could resist the allure of a parade that is as entertaining as it is meaningful?
The countdown begins for next year’s Slithering Parade—an opportunity to join in the joy while making a significant impact for those who need it most. Mark the calendars, folks, and get ready for another dazzling display of light, love, and community spirit!
