Savannah Gears Up for an Exciting St. Patrick’s Day Celebration!

The Countdown is On for the Greening of the Fountain!

It’s that time of year again, folks! Savannah is all set to kick off its St. Patrick’s Day festivities with the beloved Greening of the Fountain event, happening this Friday at noon in Forsyth Park. Get ready to see the fountain transform into a dazzling green spectacle as city crews prepare by laying down pine straw and sprucing up the area.

This annual tradition brings together families and friends, creating a fun-filled atmosphere that appeals to children and adults alike. As the moment nears, the excitement builds, and visitors can expect a heartwarming event filled with joy and camaraderie.

Special Guests and Family Fun

This year, the event will feature a special guest: the winner of WTOC’s Coloring Contest, Arianna Coyle! She will be lending a hand in greening the fountain alongside the grand marshal of the parade, Jay Burke III. Tim Mahoney, the parade committee’s general chairman, reminds everyone that this is just the beginning of the St. Patrick’s season in Savannah. The event is anchored in the values of faith, family, and friends, making it an occasion to cherish.

Schools are expected to join in the festivities, bringing children who will sing delightful songs. There’s even buzz that the Bishop will make an appearance! Attendees are encouraged to wear their finest green attire and prepare for potentially chilly weather.

For those who can’t make it in person, don’t worry! The event will be live-streamed, so everyone can share in the fun, no matter where they are.

A Tradition with Deep Roots

Savannah boasts the second-largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the United States, and this year, they’re celebrating an incredible 201 years of history since the inaugural parade in 1824. The parade has grown into a lively event known for its emerald-hued beer, lively marching bands, and, of course, those stunning green fountains.

Reflecting on its rich history, the first parade was inspired by a leisurely walk led by the Hibernian Society of Savannah. Nowadays, the modern festivities include a preparade Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, culminating in festivities that fill the historic district and conclude at Forsyth Park.

Heightened Security for a Safe Celebration

In light of recent events elsewhere, the Savannah Police Department is stepping up its security measures to ensure a safe environment for all. Water-filled barricades will be strategically placed around City Market and vital intersections along the parade route to deter any potential threats.

These barricades will begin installation on March 12, with full security measures set to roll out on March 14. Attendees should be aware of established no-parking zones along Congress and Bryan Streets from March 14 at 5 p.m. through to March 18 at 6 a.m. River Street will also see closures beginning March 14, reopening daily for delivery purposes in the early morning hours.

Additionally, towing along the parade route will start promptly at 12:01 a.m. on March 17, so don’t forget to check where you park!

Family-Friendly Activities Galore

March 17 is shaping up to be a wonderful day filled with activities for everyone. A special public to-go cup zone will be in effect, allowing visitors to enjoy their favorite beverages as they take in the festivities. Remember to snap some pictures of your little ones, making it easier to find them if they wander off amidst the celebration.

From March 14 to 17, the Plant Riverside District will be hosting the Shamrocks and Shenanigans Celebration. This family-centric event is packed with free live music, engaging activities, and delicious festive food and drink options. Plus, who wouldn’t want a photo opportunity with Lucky the Leprechaun?

So, gather your family and friends, wear your best green outfit, and get ready to enjoy an unforgettable St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah!
