During a recent meeting, the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents unanimously selected Dr. Jermaine Whirl as the sole finalist for the presidency of SSU. This marks an important milestone for the university, which has been without a permanent president since Kimberly Ballard-Washington resigned in April 2023.
The decision comes after a multi-year effort to find the right leader for SSU, with the search committee, including notable names like former Savannah Mayor Otis Johnson and state Rep. Edna Jackson, working diligently to identify the ideal candidate. The Board of Regents listened carefully to community input and evaluated resumes with the help of AGB Search, a consulting firm known for its expertise in higher education leadership. They ultimately decided on Dr. Whirl, who is no stranger to education, currently serving as the president of Augusta Technical College. His background includes notable positions as dean at Gwinnett Technical College and Savannah Technical College, as well as a faculty member at Georgia Southern University.
