Savannah Roars with Generosity at Scholarship Gala

On a lively Saturday evening, Savannah State University (SSU) gathered community members, alumni, and supporters for its 26th Annual Scholarship Gala. Held at the Savannah Convention Center on April 5, 2025, this splendid affair shone a light on the power of education and the remarkable people who contribute to it. The evening not only honored distinguished alumni and local leaders but also raised an astounding $327,472 to support scholarship programs vital to the students of SSU.

Celebrating Community and Excellence

The annual gala has become a cherished tradition since its inception in 1999, originally aimed at raising funds for the restoration of SSU’s historic Hill Hall. Over the years, it has matured into one of Savannah’s most celebrated events. This year, it was particularly poignant, as approximately 90% of SSU students depend on some form of financial aid to pursue their academic journeys. With such a significant portion of the student body relying on these vital resources, the funds generated from the gala play a crucial role in shaping their futures.

SSU’s President, Dr. Jermaine Whirl, took a moment to reflect on the importance of celebrating academic excellence and understanding the diverse backgrounds of the students who benefit from these scholarships. The gala not only aims to raise money but also serves as a reminder of the community’s commitment to fostering educational opportunities for all.

A Night to Remember: Honorees Shine Bright

At the gala, SSU honored several extraordinary individuals for their contributions in various fields. The honorees were celebrated for their unwavering commitment to scholarship, leadership, and community service:

  • Arts & Entertainment: Huxsie Scott, a beloved Savannah-native jazz and blues artist, was recognized for her remarkable 50-year music career and dedication to education.
  • Leadership: Richard Shinhoster, the former Executive Vice President of Savannah Technical College, was honored for his extensive involvement in various civic organizations and entrepreneurship.
  • Scholarship: Dr. Percy A. Mack, Jr., Chair of the Educational Leadership Department at South Carolina State University, received accolades for his impactful work in educational leadership and community service.
  • Service: The J.C. Lewis Primary Care Center, which offers affordable healthcare services, and Savannah Feed the Hungry, which has served over 1.5 million meals to those in need, were both commended for their dedication to serving the community.

The J.C. Lewis Primary Care Center, under the guidance of Dr. Rena Douse, tirelessly provides healthcare options to those facing financial hardships, demonstrating a commitment to wellness and accessibility. Similarly, Savannah Feed the Hungry, founded by Carl Gilliard, continues to tackle food insecurity in the area, working diligently since 2009 to ensure that no one goes hungry.

Building Future Leaders

During the night, Vice President for University Advancement, Adrian Scott, addressed the assembled crowd and highlighted the vital importance of investing in the next generation of leaders. This sentiment resonates deeply within the SSU community and underscores the essence of the gala’s purpose.

The funds raised help ensure that talented and deserving students can pursue their academic goals without the burden of financial barriers. Which means better educated individuals who will one day give back to their communities and inspire future generations.

While the gala was a massive success, the spirit of giving doesn’t have to stop there! Donations can still be made online, allowing anyone motivated to support SSU’s scholarship programs to contribute to this significant cause. With the potential to change lives, each donation makes waves far beyond the campus, enriching the broader Savannah community.

As Savannah celebrates yet another successful gala, it is clear that the heart of the community beats strongly for education and opportunity. Here’s to the many bright futures that will blossom because of this collective effort!
