Heavy traffic congestion on Savannah highways I-516 and I-16

News Summary

Savannah is facing significant traffic disruptions due to multiple lane closures on interstates I-516 and I-16. A car crash on I-516 has reduced traffic to one lane, while another incident on I-16 has completely shut down eastbound traffic. Authorities advise motorists to seek alternate routes to avoid delays, and investigations are ongoing into a serious motorcycle accident affecting the flow of traffic on I-516. Updates from the Georgia Department of Transportation are expected as crews work to restore normalcy on these major highways.

Traffic Troubles in Savannah: Lane Closures on I-516 and I-16

Hey Savannah, we’ve got some traffic mayhem happening on our interstates that you need to know about! If you’re out and about or planning to hit the road, you might want to pay attention because several incidents have caused lane closures and could lead to some serious delays.

What’s Happening on Interstate 516

First up, let’s talk about Interstate 516. As of 5:10 p.m., authorities said that one lane has reopened on this stretch between Montgomery Street and Veterans Parkway. This comes after a car crash that had traffic reduced to just one lane for a while. Fortunately, things are starting to clear up a little, but traffic is still expected to be slowed down. Motorists are being advised to find alternate routes if they can.

Eastbound Woes on Interstate 16

Now, if you’re heading over to Interstate 16, we’ve got more issues to discuss. A separate incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on a Thursday, where a large piece of equipment struck the Chatham Parkway overpass, causing eastbound traffic to be shut down completely. That’s right, folks—no cars are passing through on that part of the interstate! The overpass itself has also been closed off until further notice.

Traffic on both eastbound and westbound I-16 is being rerouted to Highway 17 and Highway 80. Those highways are your best bet to avoid the congestion, at least for the time being.

Investigation in Progress

To add to the traffic troubles, the Savannah Police Department (SPD) is currently looking into a serious motorcycle crash that took place on I-516 Northbound at Augusta Road. This incident led to another part of I-516 being closed while authorities work on clearing the scene and collecting evidence. While the lane is shut down, it’s best to steer clear of that area until things get sorted out.

What’s Next?

For now, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is evaluating the situation on I-16 to figure out when traffic can start flowing normally again. As of this moment, there’s no word on when that will happen, but rest assured they’re on it! Road crews and investigators are working hard to ensure your safety and get the roads back in working order.

All in all, the roads in Savannah are shaping up to be a bit of a challenge today. Users of I-516 and I-16 should brace themselves for extended delays and be prepared to navigate around the closures. Always keep a cool head behind the wheel and drive safely.

Remember folks, when in doubt, take the alternative routes, stay updated, and let’s help each other avoid the headaches that come with these traffic incidents. We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available and hope for smooth sailing on our roads very soon!
