In a move that’s sure to make waves in the healthcare landscape of the southeastern United States, Advocate Health has appointed Steve Smoot as the new Division President for North Carolina and Georgia, effective June 2. With his extensive experience and a keen understanding of the complex needs in healthcare, Smoot is stepping into a role previously held by Ken Haynes, who has recently taken a significant promotion as Executive Vice President and Chief Enterprise Services Officer for the organization.
For those unfamiliar with Smoot’s impressive background, he comes to Advocate Health from SSM Health, a prominent healthcare system based in St. Louis, Missouri. During his tenure there since 2018, Smoot earned a reputation for successfully managing an extensive network that included 23 hospitals and over 300 physician practices. Under his leadership, SSM Health—an established Catholic not-for-profit system—reported impressive revenues of $11.4 billion in 2024 while employing around 40,000 individuals.
With more than 25 years of experience in healthcare leadership, Smoot has a well-rounded background that spans multiple states, including Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. His previous positions have seen him oversee medical groups, business operations, and hospitals of various sizes and complexities. Steve has also been a part of Intermountain Healthcare, where he served as Associate Chief Operating Officer, overseeing an array of facilities, including a Level 1 Trauma Center and a Children’s Hospital.
Advocate Health’s CEO, Eugene Woods, expressed enthusiasm over Smoot’s appointment, citing a shared vision and passion for care that drives the organization’s mission to “redefine care for all.” With a focus on patient-centered approaches and community engagement, Smoot is poised to impact both the operational and strategic aspects of healthcare services in North Carolina and Georgia.
On the academic front, Smoot holds a bachelor’s degree in hospital administration from Weber State University and an MBA from Brigham Young University. His dedication to the healthcare field has not gone unnoticed, as he is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and has been honored with the ACHE Regents Award on two occasions—testament to his commitment to excellence in healthcare management.
Outside of his professional achievements, Smoot is a family man. He is married and the proud father of five daughters, along with one granddaughter and four grandsons. When he’s not busy transforming healthcare systems, you can likely find him enjoying outdoor activities, another passion of his that balances his professional life.
For those who might not know, Advocate Health stands tall as the third-largest not-for-profit hospital operator in the United States. It operates under the Atrium Health brand across the Carolinas, Georgia, and Alabama, making significant contributions to the healthcare landscape in these regions. With Smoot’s leadership, Advocate Health is set to continue its mission of providing exceptional healthcare services and making a lasting impact on the communities it serves.
As June approaches, excitement brews for what Smoot’s presidency will bring to North Carolina and Georgia. It’s a new chapter in healthcare leadership, and everyone is eager to see how this experienced trailblazer will navigate the road ahead.
