Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has signed an agreement with the initiative along with the Department of Government Efficiency, marking a significant step towards making the USPS more efficient and resilient.
The USPS has about 640,000 employees and operates as an independent government agency that primarily finances itself. DeJoy noted that this partnership is designed to help uncover and fix the bureaucratic bottlenecks that have been holding back the Postal Service’s ability to thrive. A major concern he raised was the mismanagement of their retirement assets and workers’ compensation programs, which is costing the agency billions each year.
In recent times, the USPS has been under financial strain, with unfunded mandates costing the agency somewhere between $6 billion and $11 billion annually. DeJoy went as far as to call the Postal Regulatory Commission an “unnecessary agency,” arguing that its existence has contributed to over $50 billion in losses for the Postal Service. Although his remarks stirred up quite a bit of controversy, it’s clear that DeJoy is determined to turn the tide on the USPS’s finances.
Since 2020, DeJoy has enacted substantial changes aimed at returning the USPS to profitability. This includes renegotiating contracts to save $10 billion annually and trimming the workforce by 20%. The good news? The USPS reported a profit of $144 million in the fourth quarter of 2024, marking the first profitable period in years despite suffering a $9.5 billion loss in the previous fiscal year.
As part of ongoing restructuring efforts, DeJoy has initiated a voluntary early retirement program that aims to reduce the workforce by an additional 10,000 employees. However, this plan hasn’t been without its challenges. The USPS has faced scrutiny regarding the timeliness of mail delivery, which remains a concern for many customers.
With DeJoy signaling that he plans to step down as Postmaster General, it’s an important moment for the agency. He is informing the USPS Board of Governors to start looking for a successor, hinting at the end of his five-year term. Given DeJoy’s past connections with Donald Trump and his status as a significant donor, discussions about the USPS’s future—including possible privatization—are heating up.
This partnership with the DOGE initiative has not come without its critics. There is bipartisan concern that this collaboration may undermine the efficiency and integrity of the Postal Service. This year alone there have been numerous dog attacks contributing to delivery delays in certain areas. Carriers are finding it challenging to navigate routes where safety is a concern.
